After Your First Appointment: What Happens Next?
You made it through your first appointment. We talked about what’s been going on, looked at the bigger picture, and started putting the pieces together.
So…what happens next?
If we decided to start or adjust a medication, the next step is usually simple: we give it some time and see how you respond.
At your follow-up appointment, we’ll talk about what you’ve noticed. What feels better? What still feels hard? Any side effects? How are things going with your mood, anxiety, focus, sleep, or whatever symptoms brought you in?
From there, we decide together what makes sense.
Sometimes we adjust a dose. Sometimes we give a medication more time. Sometimes we try something different. And sometimes everything is going well, so we leave it exactly where it is.
You don’t need to carefully analyze yourself every day or arrive at your next appointment with perfectly organized notes. Just pay attention to the bigger picture of how you’re feeling and functioning.
As things become more stable, appointments can usually become less frequent.
The goal of psychiatric care isn’t for treatment to become another thing consuming your life.
It’s to help your mental health take up less space in your life, so you have more room for everything else.
At Northwest Restorative Psychiatry, we’ll keep putting the pieces together as we go. You don’t have to have it all figured out at the first appointment. That’s what the appointments after it are for.
